The Long Term Effects Of COVID

The Anatomy Of The Eye

Your eyes are mucous membranes, just like your mouth or your nose. This means that it is possible to receive and transmit various bacteria and viruses through your eyes. Some studies have shown that patients with COVID-19 may develop conjunctivitis as an early sign of infection or during hospitalization in severe cases.

What are the Long Term Effects Of COVID?

COVID can cause an increased risk of retinopathy, or disease of the retina, due to oxygen deprivation that can lead to retinal tissue damage.

If you find that you are struggling with any of the symptoms below after recovering from COVID-19, schedule an appointment with your eye doctor:

  • Migraines
  • Light sensitivity
  • Eye pain
  • Redness
  • Blurry vision
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Poor depth perception

How Can I Monitor For Changes?

Many eye issues can develop without obvious symptoms, so it may be difficult to monitor for COVID-related changes. However, many of these changes can be diagnosed through an exam of your retina. Hauser Ross utilizes the most current technology to examine your eyes, including the Otomap® Retinal Exam.

An Optomap® Retinal Exam provides:

  • A scan of your eye to detect disease.
  • A more detailed view of the retina that is not visible by other means
  • The opportunity for you to view and discuss the optomap® image of your eye with your doctor
  • A record of your eye that allows us to monitor for changes each year
