Vision Disorders That LASIK Can Correct

Nearsightedness (myopia)

Patients with nearsightedness, or myopia, are unable to focus clearly on distant objects, because light rays focus before the retina of the eye. This occurs either because the cornea is too steep or the eye is too long.

Symptoms of Nearsightedness:

  • Difficulty seeing distant objects
  • Squinting in order to focus

Nearsightedness (myopia)

Farsightedness (hyperopia)

Individuals with farsightedness or hyperopia are unable to see near and distant objects clearly because the cornea curvature is too flat or the eye is too short.

Symptoms of Farsightedness:

  • Difficulty seeing objects up close and at a distance
  • Reading vision problems

Farsightedness (hyperopia)

Astigmatism occurs when the cornea, which should be shaped like a sphere, is instead shaped like an oval or the back of a spoon.

Symptoms of Astigmatism:

  • Difficulty seeing both near and distant objects without squinting
  • Blurred or distorted vision when reading
  • Objects appear to have a shadow next to it.
